Salsa On1 & On2 Classes

Welcome to our fun Salsa On1 and Salsa On2 classes at the Motion Arts Center dance studio, nestled right in the heart of downtown San Mateo!

Salsa is a Latin Dance associated with the music genre of the same name which was first popularized in the United States in the 1960s in New York City. Salsa is an amalgamation of Cuban dances such as mambo, pachanga, and rumba as well as American dances such as swing and tap.

Because we believe that learning to dance salsa is not just about mastering the steps, it’s also about finding your own unique style and rhythm, we offer two distinct classes that cater to different preferences and dancing styles.

Our talented instructors are ready to guide you every step of the way, regardless of your dance experience. We strive to create a fun and friendly atmosphere where you can meet new people and make new friends while learning a new skill. Whether you’re new to Salsa or an experienced dancer, our classes are designed to be both challenging and enjoyable!

In our studio we offer Salsa On1 & On2 classes, what is the difference between the two styles? In Salsa, the basic step is done to a quick-quick-slow, quick-quick-slow rhythm on beats 1-2-3 and 5-6-7 of an 8 count basic. On beats 4 and 8, no additional steps are taken. That’s why counts 4 and 8 are considered the “slow” portion of salsa rhythm. The main difference is when the person breaks from the center position, or which quick step goes forward or backward. When you dance on 1, the first step that goes forward is 1, and when you dance on 2, the first step that goes backwards is 2 (both break out of the center).
