Theater Jazz

Welcome to the wonderful world of theater jazz!  Join us for an all levels class that combines the foundations of jazz dance with its application in musical theater. Jazz technique serves as a great base for a diversity of dance styles, developing strength and control, balance and levity, and sharp and explosive movement.

What to expect: We will guide you through a warm up of light cardio, bodyweight exercises, and dynamic stretching to get your heart rate up and your body ready for safe activity. Afterwards, will move on to technique drills in center and across the floor, practicing your turns, leaps, and kicks with control and power.

Storytelling Through Dance: These theater jazz combinations will emphasize layering your technical skills with the emotional expressiveness and storytelling that dancing is known for bringing to a musical theater production. One week you might be embodying the lead performing their pivotal solo number, and the next you are moving through formations with your classmates as part of a high energy ensemble piece.

Expert Instruction: Each class culminates in applying these skills to learning choreography by your instructor, set to music from well known musicals from both stage and film, often inspired by the style of the original choreographer like Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, or Twyla Tharp.

Note: Singing and acting are not formal elements of this class, but you are always welcome to bring those into our in-class performances of the week’s choreography if it adds to your experience.

So join us, discover the expressive world of theater jazz in a creative and supportive environment. Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your dance skills and elevate your artistry!
